Grand National Riders Escape with a Caution

All 39 jockeys involved in the false start at this year’s Grand National in April have escaped with nothing more than a caution, despite being found to have acted in breach of the rules at a disciplinary panel hearing on Wednesday.

The world’s most famous race get off to a chaotic start this spring when the runners broke through the starting tape as Battle Group refused to line up with the rest of the field. These very actions displayed by Battle Group were behind the disciplinary panel’s decision to only caution the riders, having found that “the primary problems were from actions that were not theirs”.

A statement from the BHA said: “The disciplinary panel found 39 riders in breach of [rule] (D)44.4 as they lined up at start before being instructed to do so in Grand National. All 39 riders have been cautioned.”

Despite the guilty verdict, the jockeys should view being cautioned as a victory, seeing as they were set to receive a one-day ban from the stewards at Aintree on Grand National day.

Tom Scudamore, Sam Twiston-Davies, Tom O’Brien, Aidan Coleman, and Brian Hughes—who were among the riders who refused to attend the inquiry at Aintree—represented the jockeys at the London hearing, giving evidence for their shambles of a start.

Coleman summed up his feelings on the matter by saying it was “disappointing” the jockeys had been found guilty but at the same time he felt the punishment of a caution was a positive outcome.

“We were found in breach with is a little bit disappointing but as we weren’t wholly to blame we got a caution, which in a way is a positive thing,” he said, speaking on Racing UK. “The panel found we weren’t the only ones to blame and that’s a positive from our point of view.

“It has been long and drawn out and slightly time wasting and that’s regrettable. It’s two months since the Grand National and it has taken longer than ideal.”
